For finding a mentor in the UK, I would recommend visiting trading forums that are frequented by UK traders. Here is a list of forums where I have found users to be friendly and helpful:

    Trade2Win http://www.trade2win.com
    DailyFX http://forexforums.dailyfx.com

The following two are not the most user friendly in terms of navigation

    Hi,
If I’ve something to sell on ebay and decided to do it this way would ebay allow me?
Let’s consider my domestic currency is US Dollar. Can I do to ebay.co.uk and sell my items there with GB Pound? And can ebay deposit my earnings to my PayPal account in US Dollars, sothat I can profit from the currency discerpancies? THANK YOU!

PayPal makes the profit from currency discerpancies, and discrepancies too, and takes a chunk out of your pocket for the privilege.

BTW Never, never, never log on to PayPal from a link on a discussion board or from an email. Not even if someone emails you that your mother, wife or daughter needs money (or is being held hostage, for that matter). Log on PayPal from your Favorites, Bookmarks or just type in paypal.com in a different window or tab of your web browser.

I live in Russia. Can I use US stock broker?

Posted by admin on September 10th, 2009 and filed under uk forex | 1 Comment »

Hi. I got some money (about $4k) and I want to invest them. Currently I keep them in a local bank and get about a 5 percent year interest rate. The inflation in my country is about 10 percent and growing, so now I’m loosing. There’re some banks which can give me about 12 percent for long-term deposits but it doesn’t work for me either. So now I’m looking for other ways to make my cash work for me.

I wonder: can I do it with a help of some US (EU or UK) broker? I’d like to give my bucks to some mutual fund or try a forex trading. I got a visa card and can create a PayPal account if required.

Another question: would I have to pay my income taxes and where (in Russia or in the US)?

    Thanks in advance.

Living in Russia does not disqualify you from opening a broker account abroad. There are a few countries like Burma, Nigeria, Iran and Syria where you would not be allowed to open an account abroad because the governments have not signed up to international treaties on issues like money laundering. However Russia is fine, all that will happen is that you will be asked for ID to prove who you are and where you live.

The only issue I can think of is whether Russia has any foreign exchange controls in place. You should be able to check this with a bank if you don’t know but you should find out before you deposit any money. Technically paying money in a US broker account would be taking money outside Russia. It may therefore be a problem under Russian law.

You shouldn’t need a Visa card or Paypal account. What you invest in is (obviously) up to you, but Forex trading sounds like a quick way to lose a lot of money quickly. Particularly if you’re new to investing. A mutual fund (or OEIC fund in Europe) sounds like the smart option.

The tax you pay will depend on the tax treaty between Russia and the country that hosts your broker account. To give you an example, I am a UK citizen with an account with TD Ameritrade in the US. They withold part of my dividend payments for US tax authorities and I am also liable for some taxes in the UK. You are likely to be in a similar position.

What time do currency markets open?

I’ve been playing around with forex and made a BIG mistake on Friday by taking a buy position on the $/EUR market which then went the wrong way for me. Even more stupidly I forgot to set the stop loss triggers and by the end of trading on Friday I was down $1,500 on the position.
I want to close out the position as soon as possible on Monday but need to be in front of the computer when the market opens - which will presumably be in the Far East markets.
I’m in the UK so any answers in GMT would be very helpful indeed as otherwise I’m going to have to stare at the screen all night waiting for the market to open.
If it makes any difference I’m useing the MetaTrader 4 platform and my broker is Alpari UK,
Thanks for any help - I’m quickly going broke here!!

I think the earliest you can close your position will be on Sunday at 10:00 p.m. GMT. Because that’s when the forex market in Sydney, Australia will open.
